Why I Joined the Fellowship
During my social work studies I had not really developed much interest on social work.
Immediately after my studies along with my friend, I visited many voluntary
organizations. During those visits I had interacted with many of the staff members of
these organizations. These conversations gave me the motivation to explore social work
paradigms and continue the same in my journey for choose a meaningful career. Post
tsunami at the time NGOs were engaged in relief activities, I got the opportunity to work
with Indian Red Cross Society as a Psycho Social support officer. During this job I had
underwent many training programs and visited villages. These visits helped me to realize
the difficulties rural people face. When Mr.Pushparaj, Secretary of Voluntary Health
Services, Kaniyakumari (VHAK) informed me about the CHLO and suggested I explore
the internship I realized this was an opportunity for me to know more about physical
health aspects of human beings. I applied and was selected for the internship.
Orientation program
The Orientation program introduced me different aspects of social and economic realities
of people, I received a complete picture on health system and about the resources needed
for better health systems. In depth discussions and various methods including monsoon
game were used to explain the above issues. Monsoon game in particular was useful to
me in many ways.
I have seen few documentary films to know the activities of Narmada Bachao Andolan,
peoples’ life in Mumbai slums and about Devadasi women.
Exposure visits
This visit touched my heart - The visit to JMS, Potnal during the internship was a
heart breaking trip to me. After my visit I prayed one more Ambedkar should be born in
Potnal. The difficulties, atrocities and discrimination faced by the Dalit community in
Potnal do not correlate with human values. I have reflected many times on civilization
during this visit. The Devadasi system is kept alive here to crush the dalit women.
Dalit people are denied education which is a fundamental right of every citizen, entry to
temple, quality water and health care is denied. The Government is not taking adequate
steps to uplift them and remove 1 these discriminations. Women’s daily struggles due to
the lack of sanitation facilities cannot be expressed in writing.
I was not exposed to Dalit communities’ life and discrimination in my district, so I have
never realized the pain. I got a real picture of Dalit sufferings and denial of human rights.
Indeed the Potnal visit turned everything I knew upside down and put me in a state of
great shock.

At the same time I met Dalit women group who were successfully leading their lives by
producing and selling terracotta sculptures. Skills of the women in producing and
marketing the products are incomparable and bring hope of a life with less stress.
Haveri Public hearing
This public hearing was a new and different experience to me. Community mobilization,
preparing the stage for equal share by community and health officials, collecting real life
stories related to health, preparing testimonies were activities which involved lot of work
and it was successfully done in this public hearing. During public hearings solutions and
assurance was given to e individuals.

Activities in the field
My field placement was with VHAK, a voluntary organization working with children,
youth groups and women. This organization is a district nodal organization for NRHM
CAH project. The organization staff and secretary of VHAK helped me in many ways to
achieve my internship objectives.
I have chosen 13 villages of Kariyamancikapuram Panchyat for my field work. After I
visited Potnal I decided to work in a Dalit village to know more about Dalit community.
As I mentioned earlier, I was not aware of the difficulties faced by the Dalit community
but my internship opened up new avenues in my understanding and that is why I chose
this Panchayat for my field work.
I draw a social map in this Panchayat to know the resources, issues, and the geography of
the Panchayat and I found that the Dalit villages of this panchayat are located on the bank
of open tanks where sewage water of entire panchayat collects.
I also found a village where the drinking water is contaminated. The village name is
‘Paraikkal madam’. I have taken steps to purify the drinking water supply to this village.
I met the panchayat president and the water department officials, explained to them the
situations and difficulties experienced by the villagers following which steps were taken
to build a new bore well for this village.
During my field work typhoid was highly prevalent in the Panchayat. I initiated a
dialogue with VHSC committee members, Village Health Nurse and with VHAK. We

conducted an awareness program in the villages to take preventive measures and arrest
the spread of typhoid.
The hamlets located near to the pond were vulnerable to get water borne diseases and
typhoid. I have taken awareness classes in all the hamlets along with VHAK staff. I
trained the VHSC members on typhoid related issues in turn they have conducted
awareness programs in their villages.
An awareness program was conducted in the same panchayat on zero waste management.
I joined the survey team and we have done a survey of the entire Panchayat on the waste
disposal system. In specific I surveyed Kolathur village. Through this survey I found that
the village lacks facilities for waste disposal, 25% households do not have toilets. They
lack space to build individual toilets. There is widespread ignorance on safe defecation
practices. As a follow up we conducted awareness program to the groups on the
importance of safe toilet practices.
VHSC members took up the issue of waste disposal seriously and they had discussions
with the Panchayat president to place waste collection boxes through out the villages.
They identified suitable places to fix the waste collection boxes and now waste bins along
with information boards have been placed in strategic locations in the village. Every third
day sanitation workers collect wastes from the waste bins.
In Paraikkal madam village there are two public toilets but people were not using them
and had actually damaged the facility. After discussions with the Panchayat president and
villagers the toilets were renovated. Now the toilets are become pay and use toilets with a
minimal charge of one rupee. As a spin off the near by village Kolathur is also taking
steps to renovate their public toilets now.
I feel my major contribution is making VHSC members aware of these issues, as they
have taken steps on sanitation and waste disposal in Paraikkal and Kolathur villages
respectively I nurse the strong hope that the interest of VHSC will sustain for long time.
NRHM-CMP: I have learnt many things about VHSC such as their roles and
responsibilities, orienting VHSCs on community participation and monitoring, functions
of primary health centres and sub centres and issues like poor transportation, irregular
services of VHN and poor quality services of PHC which curtail the peoples’
accessibility to health centres.
I have oriented many VHSCs on water borne diseases.
I was also involved in the survey on Immunisation coverage done by VHAK. This survey
gave me an opportunity to conduce house to house visits and get to know more about the
health status of the people, their health seeking behaviors and information on whom they'
approach when they require medical care.

Report on the last three months of internship period
Apart from engaging with and following up with village committees work, there are two
major activities have been carried out in this period. I conducted a one day exhibition and
awareness program on different issues for the villagers & school children and preparing a
book let on water, water security and water borne diseases related information were the
two major activities.
Exhibition
One day exhibition on health and hygiene was conducted at Kozhikottu Potthai village of
Ramapuram panchayat, Agasteeswaram block. Different stalls have been put up on
nutrition, importance of water security and related issues, hygiene practices, water and
vector borne diseases, facilities provided by PHC, Sub centre and government hospitals
under National Rural Health Mission, 108 ambulance services and on children's
parliament related activities. Lots of posters, materials and photos were put up on each
issue. Many villagers, voluntary organization’s staff & school children were invited and
attended the exhibition.
During the exhibition a quiz program on the above issue was organized, in which many
school children participated. I also organized film screening on waste management and
water security during the exhibition, which helped the community to understand the
issues easily and also used for mobilizing people to visit exhibition.
Booklet
During this period I have prepared a booklet on water, water security and on water and
vector borne diseases based on my field experience and the materials I have collected.
Learning from last three months
I developed my skills and knowledge on preparing documents, handbills, preparation
required to conduct training like budget preparation, knowledge of conducting training,
role of health inspector, approaching government officials and conducting exhibition.
These are my important learnings in the last three month period.
Learning from group
The concept of study circle was very useful to me. It helped me to overcome my own
fear and to express my learning and interest to the group. Living with people from
different background and culture is a challenge and great learning experience which
internship provided me. My co intern Manjula’s assertiveness and commitment to dalit
community boosted my confidence and commitment to the society. I also learnt a few
words in Kannada and improved my fluency in English.
Group learning was a unique experience to me. Topics I have learnt covers a wide range
of issues starting from difficulties of a Gujarat villager through Sejal to commercial sex
workers’ difficulties through Shivamma and Dalit issues through Manjula

Overall learning
During the orientation classes, field work and exposure visits I have learnt many things. I
witnessed many real life ground realities faced by the powerless during my exposure
visits which have touched my heart. I have felt helplessness and anguish many times.
Ms.Shoba’s session on personality development helped me to compare my objectives
with my personality and also learnt skills to handle issues during field work. Learning on
importance of body language will help through out my life. This is session was distinct to
me in many ways.
I learnt to draw a social map through Mr.Sam Joseph’s workshop on Participatory Rural
Appraisal. The workshop was done in villages of Kollegal. Skills on drawing a map, to
collect information like communicable diseases spreading pattern from PRA exercise
were taught through practical sessions in the villages. Major learning from this workshop
to me was the multiple usages of PRA such as, building relief and welfare measures for
any community, developing self reliance of the community and to understand changes in
various systems.
Dr. Shridi’s inputs on training were very useful during my field work. He also explained
the importance of adopting different approaches to build trainees’ knowledge, attitude
and practical skills.
Through Dr.Vasundhra’s session I have learnt many facts on tobacco and related
diseases.
Ms. Satyashree’s session was useful to know about HIV/AIDS. Sessions on disaster
management was personally useful to me since I come from tsunami affected area and I
used the information I got during the sessions in the tsunami affected areas in my district.
Ms. Lavanya’s session on reporting was very useful to write my report. The session was
very interactive and interesting methodologies were used to conduct the training, she
used simple available materials to bring out the feeling of each intern. She explained the
important principles in report writing.
During the initial days of internship I had developed few objectives related to my
personality development such as leadership, speaking to group and documentation
capacity. This internship provided me many opportunities to develop those skills. For
example through preparing a booklet on water and related issues 1 have improved my
documentation skills. Apart from these tangible skills, internship brought many changes
in my attitude. Listening to others, positive speaking, accepting other’s view and
reflection on my own behaviour are few of them.
I thank my mentors Rakhal, Ameer and Pushparaj for all my learning and opportunities
given to me.
