Vivekananda Foundation is a Federation of Voluntary Organistations and individuals
committed to the cause of the development of poor and marginalised section of the society.
These organisations have been working in various sectors of social service such as Tribal
Development, Rehabilitation of Blind and Orphans, Mental Health, Rural Health and
Education, Vocational Training and Community Organisation. This federation is inspired
and guided by the ideals of tlic Ramakrishna Mission.

Education, Vocation Training and the like for their development
To promote, assist and guide individuals and voluntary organisations inspired by the
ideals of Swami VivekaiiLanda, who seek help from the foundation.
'Hie handing over of a PHC (Primary Health Ccn ; at Thithimathi in Coorg District is a
landmark beginning ol die Foundation. It eloquently speaks of die need to decentralize
health services and hand them over to voluntary sector and tiie decision of the Government
to tliis effect has been taken in this backdrop. Ihc Primary Health Centre &t Thitiumathi
and its associated sub-ccntres in the Tribal area had remained neglected and almost stopped
functioning.
The formal take-over ceremony of the PHC took place on the 17th June 1996 in the
presence of Hon’blc Health Minister of the Government of Karnataka, the monks of the
Ramakrishna Mission and many dignitaries like Mr M N Chittiyappa of BCK Group.
Vivekananda Foundation soon after taking over the PHC at Thithimathi immediately set to
improvise the infrastructure - repair of buildings, drinking water facilities, electricity etc.
Vivekananda Foundation has spent Rs.6 lakhs for the renovation of PHC building and staff
quarters. This has been possible with the generous donations from BCK Group.

The PHC at Thithimalhi stalled functioning soon. 'Hie Medical and Paramedical staff
were given the ncccasary orientation training at the Vivekananda Youth Movement H.D.
l\.<;to), a mender oigani.'intion ot the Vivekananda foundation. Dr. Balaaubramanxyain and
Dr. II Sudarshan have been regularly monitoring the PilC. The health programmes were
specially designed to reach the interior villages.
With, the earnest effort of BCK Group an ambulance has been donated to the Vivekananda
Foundation by Jan Klan gal Samstha. The ambulance services have been a great bocn io
the Tribal population in the interiors of the forest.

Progress Report
1998-99
1. MCH anti Family Welfare (RCH Programme):
SLx Tribal ANMs specially trained to work in tribal areas have been in-charge of the subcentres. I hey have provided Antenatal care to all the pregnant mothers - Registered them
before 12 weeks and checked Blood Pressure, examined urine for Albumin and sugar,
blood for IIb% and gave fetanus Toxide Injections to all of them. They also conducted
deliveries and piovidcd 1 ost-natal care. Iron-folic acid tablets (IFA) -prophylactic and
therapeutic doses were providctl to all pregnant women.

CNA Approach - nic ANMs made a survey of their population and prepared Actios}
idans for 1999 - 2000 based on the needs of the community.

Tlie Operation Theater is well equipped and good quality services are provided. Lady
Medical Officer has been conducting deliveries at PHC in a well maintained Labour room
and the Ir^diluttenal Deliveries have increased considerably compared to previous years.
2, Immunisation;
l(X)'’o immunisation has been provided to all the pregnant women and all the children have
been immunised for BCG, DP T, Polio and Measles. Cold Chain is maintained well with
the help of IL Refrigerator and Deej) Freezers.

4. Curative services;

services were provided 24-hours a day. Periodically, specialists also provided their- services
to the PHC. Qualified Surgeons and Ob &G specialists are visiting the PHC regularly and
providing Specialist services.
5. Health Education & School Health Programme:
This was carried out tluough individual contact, counseling, group discussion, audio
tapes, exhibitions and posters. Health checkup was conducted in various schools at
TliiLhimathi, Devarapura, Ncllikadu, Hebbale, Athur, Edcthore.
The causes and
prevention of deiseases such as TO, Leprosy, Malaria, were explained to the school
children. Along with that, personal hygiene, usage of iodised salt, importance of nutrition,
dental care were explained The Anganwadi and School teachers were also made aware of
(ho above inc Is.
6. Nutrition:
Nutrition is provided to under-5 children through Anganwadi in die PHC area under ICDS
scheme. PHC supervised the Nutritional Monitoring, health checkups, immunisation of
children and provided health and nutrition education.
7, Safe <kinkiin& water and stnut^tjon ;
PHC has taken up the responsibility of providing safe drinking water by chlorination of
over-head tanks, wells and also created awareness about sale drinking water, sanitation
and construction of sanitation latrine.
8. Provision of essentini drugs :
The PHC is committed to providing essential drugs and all the essential drugs are made
available al tlio PHC. Rational drug therapy is practiced in the PHC.
9, Community Participation:

ITe PI IC ensured the Equitable Distribution of Primary health services by ensuring
access ol health services to the poor and the marginalised especially SC and ST
communities by special efforts.
Participated in the Ciraina Eanchayut meetings at ihitlumathi and Devarapura.
Ullage Healih ('nninofleev (VJICx) have been set up and then© provide support in
■ various health activities tn alt the sub ccntrcs.
Mahila Sxvastha Sanghas were involved in all health programmes - motivation for
sterilisations, immunisations - and they participated in group discussions.
Local resoitrces have been mobilised for the elective functioning of the PHC.
10. The appropruiie health technology, like ORT, traditional medicine, are promoted in
the area and the health staff arc provided suitable training to do tliis. Eight distribution
centres were opened at the village-level lor distributing ORS packets lor treating diarrhoea
canes.
11. Efforts are being made to ensure Multi-sectorud approach for the integrated
development of the people by the convergence of various services at community level Health, Education, 1CDS, Panchayat Raj Institution, Public Engineering etc.
12. Effective Refferal xervic^s arc being provided from sub-ccntro to PHC, PMC to
Taluka & District Hospitals. Our ambulance is very useful in providing refferal services. In
addition specialist services are also made available at PHC.

at B R Hills for field staff.
6. IT’A and CNA training, programme at Madikerc to the licld staff.
14. Unison with the (Government:
We had excellent co-operation and support at the Directorate and Secretariat level.
I lovvcvcr, wc had many difficulties and hardships at the District Health Office level due to
the mis-undendanding of the purpose of the collaboration of NGO and the Government in
providing Primary Health Care to the people. The formation of high power committee to
bring about the collaboration is a good step and we look forward io better partnership at
the District Ixvel.

15. Constraints and,Problems:
1. The staff quarters need to be repaired. The gi ants for building repairs under IPP~9
project is yet to be sanctioned
2. Tlic non-availability of IF A and Vii 4 A’ drops.
3. The field staff are not being reimbursed by Z.P. the TA/DA for their various visits.
4. Frequent failure of electricity system affected the proper functioning and hence a
ntandby generator is required.
5. Endowment fund of the PHC is not being used lor providing diet f or patients.
6. Lack of co-operation from DHOs office.

Major Achievements of I hitliiinathi PHC since July 1996
InfrasHctyre:
The delapidated building of PHC- hospital building. Medical officers
Quarters, Stall'Nurse quarters and Majjigelialla Sub-Centre were repaired at a cost
of Ra. 6 lakhs.

Tribal people suffer from a genetic disease called Sickle Cell Anenda. Our Laboratory
is well equipped to di;)gno;;c Sickle Cell Anemia by Turbidity test and Electrophoresis.

The Crude Birth Rate, Crude Death Rate, Infant Mortality Rate, Child Mortality Rate,
Under five Mortality Rate, Still Birth Rate, Perinatal Mortality Rate, Nco-natal Mortality
Rate, Post natal Mortality Rate, Maternal Mortality Rare of the PHC area are better
than the District, State and National Level Figures.
Mother and child care Family Planning programme and Immunisation Programmes have
