OBJECTIVES:
1. To provide opportunities to the pupils fur a full and balanced
development of their personality, bearing in mind the fact that
such development is possible only in a sodal. context.
2. To make the pupils aware of social problems, social action and
the right direction of social change.
3. To provide opportunities to the pupils’ for coming into contact
with the various sections of society.
4. To induce the pupils to take active interest in various social
prohloirs and to participate in efforts.to resolve them in order
that social consciousness may develop in their minds.
5. To create in the pupils a liking for community living and to
provide them with opportunities for living, working and taking
decisions in a spirit of cu-opctation.
6. To cx’eate in the pupils a liking for self-reliance, manual work
and ?. simple and hard life.

Proper alternatives should be available in this syllabus in
order toacheive the objectives of social service. It is also neces
sary to select activities o.f social service in keeping with the
pupils' environment-.. Hence only an outline of the programme of acti
vities in this subject is suggested here.

-1. sweeping: To sweep, the class room, the school building, the
school compound, the village and the town.
2. 2. Decoration: To decorate class rooms and different parts of fe
the village cor town.
3. Cleanliness: To de all work involved in keeping the class roooms
streets in the villages and towns, public places, drinking
water and sanitary blocks clean.
4. Gardening:
To do the gardening in the school garden and
public garden?, to plant trees etc.
3. Civil works: £to make and mend roads bo dig sock-pits, to
build movable sanitary blocks.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES:
-1. To conduct a literary ckaas , to organise programmes like
story telling, newspaper reading and discussions in the
community in the neighbourhood of the school.
2. To introduce a small saving scheme among the school pupils

3. To-i.help in conducting ore -primary classes.
4. To conduct self-study classes.
HEALTH ACTIVITIES:
1. To organise a cleanliness campaign.
2. To first-aide classes.
3. To instuct different sections of the community in topics
likechild care, health and public cleanliness, end to do
practical work connected with these topics in the community.
4. To give information on tppet topics like personal cleanliness
balanced diet etc.
5. To co-opetate
in topical health activities and to help in
fighting epidemics.
EKTERTAITKENT PROGRAMME
1. To organise’ programmes of games, sports and entertainements
2. To organise entertainment programmes like story-telling,
play acting, singing etc.
3. To organise programmes of community prayers,bhajans, kirtans
ballads etc.
4. To organise programmes like excursions and hikes.
SCCIJiAL SERVICE
1. To attend on the sick , to entertain them and $o keep them
company
2. To give all kinds of help to the handicapped.

Civil aefence
Labour camp(one week's duration). Cut of the 64 periods
alloted to the subject during the year, 52 periods should
be utilised for the labour camp. The camp should be held
for week in the vacation after September. The site of the
camp should be selected after visiting two to theee vill
ages

Social survey.
The projects outlined under Head(7) should be coinpul
sory for all students of secondary schools. A&mAs regards pro
grammes outlined under the remaining six heads it should- be seen
that the pupil regularly participates in at least one of the prrogrammes unaer each head.

Avery school has to proviue the equipment necessary for intro
ducing the subject of Social Service. It is not feasible to make
a complete list of all the equipment needed for this subject.
However, a list of the new items of equipment that will be requ
ired for some of the activities in this subject is given below.
Buckets, brooms, shovels, spades,ghamelas,water sprinklers
rope, drums for storing water etc.
Ind addition, the following equipment should also be made
available.

Once the syllubus in social service is introduced in secon
dary schools, it wi.il be necessa.ry to devise tests for evalu
ating pupil achievement. J-he following means should be used in
the process of evaluation:
Pupils's diaries.
Group leaders' diaries.
Teachers reports.
Io facilitate evaluation pupils should be divided into groups.
Lach group should, consist of six to eight-guils-s--: pupils.
