PART I
PERFORMANCE OF NATIONAL TUBERCULOSIS PROGRAMME
DURING THE QUARTER JANUARY - MARCH 1996
The performance of National Tuberculosis Programme (NTP) during
the quarter January - March 1996, is summarised below.
This
covers the entire NTP, both long and short term chemotherapy
in the implemented districts.
1. GENERAL OBSERVATIONS
a) Only 392 District Tuberculosis Programmes (DTPs),
out of 496 districts (i.e., 79%) have been imple
mented.
States like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and
Orissa have to implement more districts, as less
than 50% of the districts only are implemented.
b) Reporting by DTPs is of the order of 78.8% of the
expected.
c) Reporting by Peripheral Health Institutions (PHIs),
is of the order of 67.9% of the expected.
d) Supervision by the District Tuberculosis Centre (DTC) ■
is generally poor and it is 32% at National level.
e) Only about 22% of tuberculosis cases detected are
sputum positive and ‘cases detected through X-ray
examinations are abnormally high (72%).
f) Confirmation rate of sputum positive among pulmonary
cases is very low (i.e., less than 20%) in DTCs of 12
States / Union Territories (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh,
Bihar, Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Meghalaya, Mizo
ram, Nagaland, Tripura and Uttar Pradesh).
g) Sputum positivity rate in PHIs is very low (i.e.,
below 5%) in 20 States / Union Territories (Andaman &
Nicobar Islands, Assam, Chandigarh, D & N Haveli,
Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir,
Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland,
Orissa,
Pondicherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu,
Tripura and Uttar Pradesh).
