FACTS AND FIGURES ON FAMILY WELFARE, APRIL, 1985
1.
OUR POPULATION AND THE FAMILY WELFARE PROGRAMME
.As of March 1981, we were about 685 million
We have more than doubled since 1941, when we were about 319 millton
We have grown in the decade:
13.31 per cent
21.51 per cent
24.80 per cent
25.00 per cent
1941-51 by
1951-61 by
1961-71 by
1971-81 by
Thus, the increase in our decadal growth rate has reached a plateau, yet
our growth rate is very high.
We have Increased in the decade:

IMPACT OF FAMILY WELFARE PROGRAMME
Decline in decadal growth rate as compared to that In the preceding decade was shown In:
1961-71 by
8 States/Union Territories with 13.0% of the country’s population
1971-81 by
15 States/Union Territories with 47.1% of the country’s population
Thus, many more States/Unlon Territories have now shown decline in growth rate and nearly half our population
was subject to a decline in growth rate by 1981.
Family Welfare Programme averted 37 million births (estimated) during 1971-81.
But for the programme, the 29 million survivors among them would have increased
Our population as of March 1981 to
714 million
Our decadal growth rate to
30 per cent
Percentages of population In age groups 0-4 years and 5-9 years have declined from 14.51 to 12.59 and
14.96 to 14.07
*
respectively between 1971-81. Similarly, child (0-4) woman ratio and child (5-9) woman
ratio have also declined from 655 to 546
*
and 755 to 695
*
respectively between 1971 and 1981.
